oviedohill.JPG Oviedo, the capital of Asturias has the assured air of a sophisticated cosmopolitan city. Elegant shops, pavement cafes, an abundance of excellent restaurants to suit most pockets. Yet, it is much more than this, Oviedo was once the capital of Christian Spain and can trace its history back to 757. It has a superb cathedral and a university which is round about 400 years old. In the centre of the city is the Campo de San Francisco. A delightful and atmospheric city park often full of contented people enjoying Chocolate and Churros!

The park sits next to the oldest part of the city containing the 14th century Cathedral with its distinctive stone tower. Access can be gained here (at certain times) to the original church of Alfonso el Casto now called the Camara Santa. This building contains many of the areas religious treasures. Oviedo's cathedral has always been well known for its collection of relics including apparently, one of Judas's 30 pieces of silver!

Elsewhere the city has great style. The buildings, the old quarter, the setting of the city, the elaborate fountains found all around Oviedo . There are archaeological and fine arts museums, as well as on Opera house. Excellent night life and entertainment make this a fine city in which to spend some time.
